at The Dive Connection, we are very pleased to be linked with the Nautical
Archaeological Society (NAS), who are also based in Portsmouth. The NAS carry out investigative survey and research work on our maritime heritage, both in the water and on dry land. As ordinary divers, there are lots of opportunities for you to get involved with NAS training and projects that can enable you to broaden your diving horizons and also to be able to dive on otherwise protected wrecks. The Society offer various traning courses which range from the NAS Introduction to Foreshore and Underwater Archaeology, which lasts one day and involves a half day in the pool practicing underwater mapping techniques and then a classroom based session where you will get the chance to map your findings and see how accurate you were. The day also involves some very intersting and information lectures on the laws of maritime conseravtion and salvage and the rules regarding wreck protection both in the UK and worldwide. Following on from the NAS Introduction, is the Part 1 course which is a Certificate in Foreshore and Underwater Archaeology providing open water experience of research and mapping techniques as well as enhancing your understanding of maritime archaeology and preservation in the classroom. NAS Part 2 Certificate takes the research element further and having learned the basics, the Part 2 course encourages you to use them by producing a short survey report on a site of your choice. You are also expected to develop awareness of broader activity in archaeology by attending the equivalent of two days of relevant conferences. NAS Part 3 is an Advanced Certificate in Foreshore and Underwater Archaeology and is a broad qualification achieved by attending weekend courses and field schools, or by working on archaeological sites. The courses include: conservation, archaeological science, illustration, photography, ROVs, advanced diving, geophysical survey, excavation and IT skills. Having achieved NAS Certification, a whole new world of wreck and research/survey diving opens up to you. Why not broaden your diving skills and experience and help us and the NAS undertake some real wreck survey work? Click here to go to the NAS website for more details. |
